How do I create a new aspect to observe against?
To create a new aspect, go to ‘Admin’ > ‘Teaching and Learning Admin’ > ‘Framework’. Scroll to the bottom of the table and click ‘Add New Aspect’. The system will ask you for:
- a name;
- any prompts (which appear as guidance on the form);
- which form types you would like it to appear on;
- the order number (which defines where it appears on the form).
You can also choose to add an aspect template (which appears as editable text in the comments box), to hide certain elements of the aspect (e.g. the grade dropdown), to force the aspect to appear expanded or to rename certain labels on the aspect (e.g. the comments box label).
Once you’ve completed those options, press ‘Save’ and your new aspect will appear in the table. Where it appears will depend on the sort number that you’ve given it (if you left that field blank it’ll be zero and will appear at the top).
If you want to add a bank of evidence for your aspect, find it in the table and click ‘View Descriptors’. This will pop up a blank form with a button that says ‘Add New Tab’. You can add as many tabs as you like, depending on what evidence you need to store. For example, for our lesson visit aspects, we have two tabs – one for teacher descriptors and another for learner descriptors. Once you’ve clicked the button, give your tab a name and click ‘Save Changes’. It should appear across the top of your pop up like so:
Don’t worry if you need to rename it later on, you can always do that with the ‘Edit Details’ button.
Next you’ll need to add the columns for your descriptors. If you’re using Ofsted style grading, you might have four, one for Outstanding, Good, etc. Or if you’re not grading at all you might create just one called ‘Checklist’ or ‘Evidence’. When you’re done it should look something like this:
The last thing to do is to add your descriptors to your column(s). These can be added one by one by clicking on the ‘Add New Record’ button under the relevant column. Once you’re done, click ‘Close’ and you’re finished. You can now start using your new aspect by creating a new form and selecting the form type that you linked your aspect up to.
